There are many ways you can start new things. The starts are refreshing. I want to start by telling you of a fight. A household debacle.
So, we ordered a new phone for Papa(Dad). And it arrived in half a day. Papa came in the evening and started to figure out this new ‘technology’. Great, good for him. The thing is nobody remembered to show the new purchase to BadiMummy (GrandMa). An elder of the house.
Fire was going to be unleashed.
It was going to be 12 hours since the delivery and no one had shown her the phone, yet.
Obviously, it’s going to get very very bad, because It almost seems like we wanted to hide the phone from her. Or that she doesn’t matter enough to be told that she isn’t counted.
An Indian household works on the principle that everyone must stay together. Everyone is a member. A part of a whole. If you order something new, the elder of the house will be shown the box first. It’s just Ethics. If you’re not an Indian, you may find this a little out of the way.
She had blown.
It was justified. I mean, come on you can’t blame her. She threw words. Mean ones. And it’s still justified. She was all done to live with us anymore. She didn’t want us. But then again, that’s the thing about an Indian Household.
She may be saying all that, but you have got to let the storm pass. Stand there and apologize and apologize and then again… Apologize. Don’t go thinking that she actually means for you to go away. No!
Don’t leave. Because the next morning, it’s all okay again. She’ll forget it. For the day.
And you’ll have learnt a lesson. You’ll forget too.
Until the next fight.
Perfect description of Indian family and their ways

Really love the ending to this – something very profound to be learnt from it when it comes to more general arguments and debates in increasingly polarised societies I think

I understand you being skeptical about opening up on a world stage to an unknown audience. It takes courage. I applaud you. And I have learnt something about Indian households….

This is such a good lesson. And it’s very true, in Indian families everyone is a part of a whole and personally, I find that endearing. I found this post to be very interesting and meaningful, bravo!✨

Life is such a dance, and if you don’t ‘know’ the steps so much hurt can result. I’m so glad that you understand the ways of your household. Calm in the storm which will pass. If only more of us responded this way rather than reacting in anger to these storms passing through. You are wise indeed. Namaste.
